What Is Skin Discoloration?
When caused by vein disease, skin discoloration is when the surface of the skin turns a red, brown or black color, usually in a patch or area on the legs or feet. This kind of skin discoloration is the result of venous reflux and can also cause itching, scabbing and cracking of the skin.
What Causes Skin Discoloration?
In vein disease, the valves can become damaged or weak to the point where blood can no longer be successfully pumped back to the heart. When this occurs, the blood pools in the legs and feet, creating excess pressure in the area. When the pressure becomes too much for the veins in the lower extremities, the blood can begin to seep into the surrounding soft tissue, resulting in visible “stains” above skin’s surface. There is iron in our blood that can leak into the skin from the vein. The iron leakage into skin that causes brown staining is called hemosiderin. The staining of the skin related to the veins leaking iron is called hemosiderin staining.
