What Are Skin Changes/Dermatitis?

Dermatitis is an umbrella term used to describe skin inflammation. The inflammation can be characterized by discoloration, pain, itching, burning, and changes in texture. Since dermatitis can include a range of symptoms, it often goes undiagnosed or even misdiagnosed. These symptoms include:

  • Hard-to-heal rashes
  • Itching of lower legs
  • Shiny skin (a sign of thinning skin)
  • Irritated or painful skin
  • Discoloration, particularly skin that has turned red or brown
  • Flaking or dry skin
  • Throbbing Sores that will not heal
  • Scabbing or crusting

If you have skin change/dermatitis symptoms, trust only venous disease experts to diagnose and treat you correctly. The skin is often a reflection of the body's inner workings, and any apparent or painful changes must be examined as soon as possible. Even if you do not have visible varicose veins, dermatitis is often a warning sign during the advanced stages of venous diseases.

What Causes Skin Changes/Dermatitis?

Skin changes and dermatitis are caused by venous disease. Venous disease occurs when the valves of the veins are damaged or weak and can no longer efficiently pump blood back to the heart. Instead, the blood pools in the lower extremities, creating a buildup of pressure. This pressure can lead to many venous conditions, including dermatitis. Dermatitis occurs when the pressure becomes so intense that the red blood cells and fluid leak into the tissue surrounding the veins, causing pain, irritation, and staining, which becomes discoloration above the skin’s surface.

What Is the Treatment for Skin Changes/Dermatitis?

We will first consult with you about your medical history and assess your dermatitis symptoms. Next, our board-certified radiologists will use ultrasound technology to determine if you have vein disease. Once vein disease has been confirmed or ruled out, we will create a personalized treatment plan based on the underlying cause of the skin changes.
