What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome, also known as chronic leg restlessness, is characterized as a person feeling uncomfortable sensations in the legs. These sensations often cause people to frequently reposition their legs to help ease the feelings, hence the term “restless.” Our patients often describe the experience of having this syndrome as having unexpected urges to move their legs due to the sudden onset of symptoms such as:

  • Cramps
  • “Pins and needles”
  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Pain
  • Aching
  • Throbbing

For some, this tingly sensation and constant need to move one's legs during rest is an annoyance, but in some cases, it can get so severe it becomes unbearable.

Who Has Restless Leg Syndrome?

This is a very common condition, which is believed to affect more than one out of 10 people. Leg restlessness is most common in women but can be found in individuals of all ages. For most, symptoms increase in severity over time and become most problematic for middle-aged people and the elderly.

I Move My Legs a Lot, Do I Have Restless Leg Syndrome?

Many people frequently reposition their legs for a variety of reasons. Other conditions, such as anxiety, ADHD, and chronic pain, can result in people repositioning frequently. Our board-certified radiologists will use ultrasound technology to determine if your leg restlessness results from an underlying vein disorder before recommending a treatment plan.

Is There a Treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome?

To determine an effective treatment plan, we must first determine the underlying cause of your leg restlessness. If our specialists perform an ultrasound and decide that you have restless leg syndrome that may be aggravated due to a venous condition, we will provide a treatment plan just for you.

When leg restlessness is worse due to a venous condition, it is often through venous reflux. Venous reflux occurs when damaged or weakened valves in the veins prevent blood from traveling successfully back to the heart. The blood pools in the feet and legs and creates pressure, which causes the need to move the legs in an attempt to become more comfortable. We offer many vein treatments to help with this condition.
