What Is Phlebitis?

Phlebitis, or thrombophlebitis, is inflammation of a vein caused by blood clots. Typically occurring in leg veins, these blood clots cause pain and swelling. Phlebitis can occur in surface (superficial) as well as deeper veins and individuals can experience symptoms in both cases.

In surface veins, the blood clots often resolve quickly when treated promptly and properly. In deeper veins, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the blood clots can break loose and travel dangerously to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. This can create a fatal outcome and requires immediate medical attention.

What Causes Phlebitis?

When in superficial veins, phlebitis is typically caused by vein trauma during or after a medical procedure. When phlebitis occurs in veins without injury, the following risk factors should be considered:

  • Varicose veins
  • Inactivity during long car or airplane trips
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Blood disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Physical injury
  • Hormonal imbalances, such as using birth control or hormone replacement therapy

What Are The Symptoms Of Phlebitis?

If you are experiencing symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, seek medical intervention immediately. These symptoms include:

  • Swelling of the leg (upper or lower)
  • Pain in the leg (often described as a Charlie Horse that won’t go away
  • Painful lumps on the leg
  • Shortness of breath (could be a clot that traveled to lung)
  • Back or rib pain (could be a clot that traveled to lung

The symptoms of superficial phlebitis are similar and may be more painful and can include red discoloration.
