Dry skin is a difficult problem to deal with and a flakey face is never a confidence booster. Sure, you moisturize, but you’re still plagued with dry, itchy skin. What should you do to change it? Dr. David West at Vein & Body Specialists shared his top eight tips to finally saying goodbye to your dry skin.
1. Moisturize (At Least) Twice a Day Every Day
Let’s start with the basics. Using a high-quality moisturizer at least twice a day every single day is one of the most important steps you can take to getting rid of your dry skin. Remember that not all moisturizes do the same job. We recommend talking to your doctor about adding medical-grade skincare to your moisturizing routine.
2. Hyaluronic Acid is Your New Best Friend
Products with hyaluronic acid help to boost the body’s natural production of collagen, a protein that binds with water molecules to keep the skin looking plump and radiant. Consider adding medical-grade skincare products like the Skinceuticals® HA Intensifier or the Skinmedica® HA5 rejuvenator to your skincare routine for an added punch of hyaluronic acid.
3. Use Glycolic Acid Each Night
Glycolic acid is another friend to keep in your close circle. This alpha-hydroxy acid supports natural skin cell turnover to produce smoother-looking and softer skin. We recommend checking out products like the Skinmedica® Glypro serum that also contains phenyl trimethicone, which creates a moisture barrier on the surface of the skin.
4. Use a Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Harsh facial cleansers contain chemicals that will end up drying out your skin. We recommend using medical-grade facial cleansers that skip over those chemicals and use natural ingredients. Look out for cleansers that have your friend hyaluronic acid in them.
5. Exfoliate Three Times a Week
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. We cannot say this enough. Exfoliating your skin gets rid of the top layer of dead skin cells and helps to reveal the fresh skin lying just beneath. Exfoliating also unclogs pores and evens out skin tone. It’s a win-win.
6. Try a BB Cream
A lot of foundations stick to dry spots on the face and dry the skin out even more. Others leave you in an oily mess. Try getting the best of both worlds with a BB cream. This lightweight foundation has moisturizing properties in it to ensure your skin doesn’t flake throughout the day.
7. Drink Lots of Water
This is one of our easiest tips to give you. The more you hydrate your body, the more you hydrate your skin. Drinking a lot of water doesn’t cost a lot of money and, arguably, brings more benefits than some of the fancy skincare products you see on the market.
8. Stay Away from UV Rays
While hyaluronic acid is your best friend, UV Rays are your worst enemy. We can’t stress the importance of wearing a strong SPF enough! Remember, not all SPFs are created equal. Avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone in them and look out for products with zinc oxide instead.
